Krasnoselskoie College of Art Metal dates back to 1897 when a Drawing Studio was open in the village of Krasnoie located in Kostromskaya district of Russia. The studio was needed because since the XVI century the village of Krasnoie had been known for its jewelry craft. The aim of the studio was to improve the artistic skills of local jewelers.
The Drawing Studio was supervised by a Stroganov Schools’s graduate S. Monastyrsky and seven years later the studio turned into the Handicraft Art Tuition Workshop (HATW). K. Apukhtina was also a teacher of the workshop who had graduated from Stroganov School. Another teacher I. Deryabin was an artist and a master of filigree work. He laid the foundation of Krasnoselskaya filigree technique. The students of the Workshop often exhibited their works at international exhibitions and received awards. It was the beginning of the XX century when Krasnoselskoie Workshop got their reputation of true custodians of the traditions of the art metal: enamel, engraving, filigree, stamping, casting, inlay etc. All these techniques are taught at the college until now.
Nowadays the students and graduates of the College still win at numerous contests and jewelry exhibitions. A great deal of their works is included in the Art Sample Room of Krasnoselskoie College. The history of the College is tightly connected with the collection of the Art Sample Room. It contains silver jewelry made in art nouveau style of the beginning of the XX century. Tableware, stationery and interior decorations created in the techniques of embossing, engraving and casting deserve careful study. The hits of the collection are the works in the techniques of “ground” casting and “live nature” casting. They combine the skills of famous casters of the village of Krasnoie and the high level of art education of the Workshop. Some of the pieces demonstrate very fine work: branches of ashberry, pine and fir trees; fir cones; frogs, lizards and fish. So the collection of Art Sample Room of Krasnoselskoie College is very diverse and multifold.
The College is proud of its collection of teaching exhibits and materials that was purchased at the time of the Workshop formation. They include plaster reliefs, metal pieces, embossing, ceramics from the collection of the Stroganov School; vase patterns, copies of the students’ and famous artists’ works from Stieglitz School in St. Petersburg; cast sculptures of Kasli, “Byzantine enamel” collection by A. Zvenigorodsky (1892). Later the teaching supplies were replenished with collections of bone and stone carving, wood painting, stitch and embroidery pieces, as well as filigree and enamel works. Krasnoselskoie jewelers’ works from the XVI to the XX centuries take a special place in the collection. There are trunks, boxes, casting, chasing and engraving works in it as well as Orthodox Church art pieces including carved wooden crowns. The museum's collection also includes items from an Industrial Design School opened in 1934. In that school both the traditions of folk art and the Workshop in jewelry, interior decorations and china were continued.
